#1 : ( Notice #18 ) Ben Owen : "
Birds and Water, 1
" (C94)

Those with a certain taste will be familiar with Ben Owen’s subtle yet stunning design work with his Brooklyn-based Winds Measure Recordings imprint, which also releases his own carefully crafted music in both collaborative and solo form. These are two masterfully textured sidelong pieces exemplifying his attention to craft, process, and detail at the most painstaking levels, while still embracing the sonic imprecision of the cassette tape medium.
"These recordings were made on residency with The Experimental Television Center in Owego, NY during May 2010. This was my third and—unknown to me at the time—last residency, as the Center has now closed. While two of three residencies were in partial an audio/video collaboration with Justin Lincoln, the Birds and Water series is my main body of work created at ETC. The recordings are both sound and sound and image based pieces using David Jones' image processing system. ETC expanded operations in 1974 with the first Jones Colorizer, and in 1975 with a set of keyers, a multi-input syncable sequencer and a bank of oscillators, all designed and constructed by David Jones. The analog system modules coupled with several external op amp generators are heard in these sessions. Numerous patches and variations of each were recorded in extended durations. Side A was recorded direct to cassette tape. Both recordings are presented in their unedited duration.
Thanks to Hank Rudolph, Sherry and Ralph Hocking, Justin Lincoln, Giuseppe Ielasi and Evan Lindorff-Ellery."

Items of Interest :
- TOUR Travis Bird and Evan Lindorff-Ellery (and sometimes as Dense Reduction) are still on tour with Super-8mm filmmaker Jaap Pieters. Our tour is about half over. Currently writing this from Pittsburgh. So far we've received wonderful reception from the films and sound. If you're in or near a city that finds us making a stop, please come by for the screening. The shows are cheap or by donation.
- Photographs of the tour may be found on Evan's blog and the "official" tour blog directed by Jaap.
- Forthcoming releases by Sound Collision Alliance, Josh Burke, Illusion of Safety, John Cage's "One3", Derek Ho's string quartets, Anne Guthrie, Jez Riley French, Waterwheel/Windmill (a Kiln-related project), Seth Cluett, Ryan Jewell and more.
- Our website is currently still (still !) in the works. Nathan McLaughlin has been an invaluable guide during this venture into unknown territory, which is website coding. Seems to be on hold for the moment...

Updates, News *UPDATED*

Some tapes are still available, specifically the two just announced, so please send us an email for purchase if you're interested. We also have some back stock available at discounted prices.
*Paypal and contact is: noticerecordings [at] gmail [dot] com

A few things which have developed recently and are worth mentioning here :

Travis Bird and Evan Lindorff-Ellery will be touring with Dutch filmmaker Jaap Pieters, playing sound and music to his silent Super-8 films. This is a collaboration which developed after Travis' meeting with him at the Media City Film Festival in Windsor, Ontario. We will be playing some Dense Reduction material, but primarily more improv-based sound works to accompany his films.

In other news, an email-conducted interview by Foxy Digitalis / Digitalis Industries has been posted on their site. A fine example of how we see things, now:

The Wire magazine has posted two of our tapes on their "Sleeves Received" blog, featuring "gems" received in their "mailbag". A great, simple blog, highlighting some of the fantastic printing and design work on so many records, CDs, and cassette tapes these days. Dense Reduction : "Shadows Of Shipwrecks In Napkins On Shore"

A review for Dense Reduction's tape "Shadows of Shipwrecks in Napkins on Shore" has been posted on the Foxy Digitalis website here. A flattering and oddly both inaccurate and accurate review. Never have DR been considered "ultra-leftfield dance" and "minimal wave". Amusing ! Thank you Jan-Arne Sohns for the kind review.

The financial benefit for us in this review would be Sohns' mention of the current availability of this tape. Indeed, it is. Available. You may purchase this, and other tapes, buy *clicking this button*

In other news, Travis Bird has been enjoying his solo tour on the East Coast, and had a recent radio programme with Joe Houpert of Loud & Sad on WPRB, which may be available as streaming audio here, at some point.

Announcements for two new tapes will made next week.
After that, in August, will be Yellow Crystal Star and Josh Burke.

Hopefully everyone is enjoying their summer. It has been oppressively hot in Chicago.

Travis Bird, "Two Tidal States"

Travis Bird has released a tape on Digitalis Industries. It is entitled "Two Tidal States". These pieces were recorded at Elmwood in the Autumn of 2010, utilising his Korg MS2000R, analogue delay and tube reverb.

The tape is available via Digitalis Limited Editions, us, and probably a ton of distributors.

Sound samples are available here :

Travis Bird "High, Never Reached" (multiple excerpts) by foxydigitalis

Travis Bird "Low, Evaporated" (Excerpt) by foxydigitalis

In addition to this tape, we have a number of others available. Get in touch.

Update : Godseye, Organ of Species

In the works are two tapes by Brad Rose and Eden Hemming's Godseye project, and Scott "Cloud" Johnson's new alias Organ of Species. These should hopefully be available by the end of the year.

(Notice #14) : Godseye - "No More Cake Here" (C40)

(Notice #15) : Organ of Species - "Random Selection" (C30)

We also just noticed that Tomentosa has copies of Evan Lindorff-Ellery's tape "Conflicts and Interrelationships" (NTR002). This is sold out at Discriminate Music, and we don't have any copies left. So they're the last ones.

Look for more Lindorff-Ellery, on a forthcoming project with Travis Bird, featuring solo works, and on the solo tape "The Tea Merchant and His Atmospheres".

Here is a preview of the Godseye tape, as posted on Foxy Digitalis / Peyote Tapes :

Jon Mueller, Illusion of Safety at Reuben's Palace

Fire is conjured from areas of concentrated energy as are the visceral textures of Jon Mueller's confrontational live performances — teeming with shifting miniature aural activities.

Photograph taken last night at Reuben's Palace in Chicago. Although, unfortunately, Reuben was not present for the show. Also playing that night was Illusion of Safety, presenting one of his many intense, aggressively undulating modular synth experiments, featuring impromptu guitar playing by Travis Bird . IOS should have a live double-cassette release within a couple months.

Mueller's cassette release on Notice Recordings, " Halves ", should be released in a few weeks, along with an as-yet-untitled C90 from Ben Owen.

Much to come ; stay in touch.
All the best to you during this transitory period.

Bird & Burke video

Here is a quick montage video of the Bird & Burke duo peforming at WNUR last winter. An amazing day of fog rolling in over Lake Michigan , with chunks of ice and snow floating on the undulating surface. Kind of funny to see this during the summer.
Be sure to attend their performance at the Hideout tonight around 10PM. The new record on Complacency will be sold at this show !

Montage by Dan Burke, footage by Evan Lindorff-Ellery.

A quick excerpt of a "review" by Peter Margasak of the Offstrings record : "... the real-time activity is beautifully complemented by clouds of effects-enhanced harmony, drone, and texture. In some cases it's clear that a guitar is the main sound source, and in others it's much harder to be sure."

Offstrings performance at The Hideout

Almost forgot to mention the show at the Hideout coming up this Friday, which will support the new record on Complacency, mentioned below.

Travis Bird & Daniel Burke
Michael Vallera

The Hideout, 1354 West Wabansia

That record will be for sale as well as some Notice Recordings stuff.

Tapes sold out; two new ones; TB & DB tour; Dense Reduction on Digitalis

*All our tapes are sold out, including the Dense Reduction tapes from earlier in the year. *

Hello from Maine, down from North Eastern Canada, en route to Vermont and soon back to Chicago. Other half in California.

HOWEVER, for all of America, please contact Discriminate Music for all 8 tapes.
For folks in Europe, and presumably the rest of the world, wanting the newer tapes and also the Illusion of Safety reissue, "Repairs", they may contact Colour Ride (not for IOS) or Boomkat. Boomkat should have a fair amount of the North Sea tape and a very limited amount of the IOS tape.
Colour Ride currently has Tärr and The North Sea, and Boomkat should post theirs in about a week. Things are available from Discriminate now.

Since releasing the tapes listed below, a small hiatus has ensued, soon ending with two new Notices : #11 and #12. The first is by Red Electric Rainbow, who is deeply entwined within the weaves of preparation for the Neon Marshmallow Festival, taking place at the Viaduct Theatre this August in Chicago. The lineup is exceptional. Be sure to attend. Artwork this time on green paper, printed with white ink.

The second tape is by Yellow Crystal Star, who will also be embarking upon a tour this late July. Music recorded in Bangkok. Featuring photography by Mark integrated into the Notice Recordings design.

In other news, Travis Bird & Dan Burke will be touring for their guitar duo project along the East Coast in September. Exact dates and venues TBA.

Also, Dense Reduction and probably Illusion of Safety (or some combination of DR, DR & IOS, ELE + TB & DB, etc) will be performing on WHPK's show, "Pure Hype". Details are unclear as of now, but the airing should be on the 23rd of July.

And lastly, look out for a DR tape on Digitalis Industries Ltd., dropping sometime in July. It is called "Fictive Agriculture".

That's all for now. A couple photographs from excursions might be posted later, as well as other Notice News.

Hope everyone is enjoying the summer... take in an open landscape; accepting the miniature summer epiphanies.

FOR SALE; Illusion OF Safety "Repairs" Reissue is now available. All other tapes still available.

The classic Illusion Of Safety cassette tape originally issued on Sound Of Pig in 1988 is now available after some delay regarding the printing. Finally, we found an excellent and friendly printer : Kill Hatsumomo right here in Chicago. She did a great job. The cover art is the same as the original, given to us by Dan Burke, except this time it's silkscreen printed. The paper is heavyweight. The whole package looks great ! We have about 30 of these for sale from us, from an Edition of 50. Dan has some as well.

This is the same price as the other tapes : 6$ for North America and 9$ for the World.
Please Paypal the money to noticerecordings[at]gmail[dot]com. Thanks to those who pre-ordered. Please contact for other options of payment.

All the other tapes are currently available as well, pictured below.
If you buy 3 tapes, we will give you one for free. Buy all 6 tapes for 30$ including worldwide shipping. Selling tapes funds more releases, and we have lots to release !

Notices #3 & #4 are pictured above in two different ways. Along with the previous 2 Notices, the Travis Bird & Daniel Burke (Illusion of Safety) tape, "Negentropy", is also listed.
Click on each image for enlarged versions.
The first four cassettes pictured are letterpress printed ink drawings by E. Lindorff-Ellery, 2 panel fold-over inserts on heavy-weight, textured stock. "Repairs" is, as mentioned above, silkscreen printed.

Briefly ; more later

Just a quick post for the moment.

The Travis Bird & Daniel Burke tape, "Negentropy" is now for sale.
Notices 3 & 4 : Dense Reduction tapes, "Hobbes Diamond" and "Cornerstone Mill" are now for sale.
The Illusion of Safety reissue, "Repairs", has been duplicated and is back from the plant, but the inserts still need to be printed.
Those of you who have made pre-orders, we thank you ! The tapes will go out as soon as possible.
**Pre-orders help fund new releases. All money received goes towards new releases**

All tapes are 6$ and orders and pre-orders are accepted. Everything is available.

Forthcoming tapes by Yellow Crystal Star, Red Electric Rainbow and Jon Mueller are in discussion.

Upcoming is a series of C90 tapes by E. Lindorff-Ellery utilising layers of rediscovered unmastered 4-Track tapes of bell and metallic loops, diffused field recordings, AM radio, empty sounds of amplified portable audio players, blank tapes, and internal feedback, all recorded live to stereo 2-Track, creating a subjective (non)narrative of textual successions.

Pictures of tapes, samples of audio and descriptions of content are all coming soon.

The craziness of the blog may end soon, being replaced by an actual website.

Please be in touch.
Thank you.

The recent live WNUR performance by Travis Bird and Daniel Burke is now available for listening on the station's website. The performance included a number of diverse passages, as well as a brief interview. Video was captured throughout and will be edited into visual elements for future performances, and perhaps a throwback "music video," once a staple for major-label-backed television exposure.

Chicago is experiencing a lively and unexpected snowstorm today. Those not working outdoors will toast once again to the continued bravery of such hearty souls who keep the city functioning during these white moments.
