Winter season

Saturday morning snowfall along the Chicago River, near Notice Recordings' HQ, in the neighbourhood of Ravenswood.

Things slowed down towards the end of the summer and into Autumn, but all that should change soon. We should have some holiday download-only releases posted soon, the two aforementioned Godseye and Organ of Species releases listed below, and much more after the turn into a new year.

In the works are two tapes by Brad Rose and Eden Hemming's Godseye project, and Scott "Cloud" Johnson's new alias Organ of Species. These should hopefully be available by the end of the year.

Thoughts : Jon Mueller, Olivia Block in performance

In the Internet world, it’s been an eternity since I saw the Olivia Block/Jon Mueller in-store performance at Chicago’s Saki Records. In fact, it’s only been since last Saturday (16 October 2010), and because of the remarkable convergence of several really exciting elements, I’m still excited about it as I write this tardy review.

Saki is a relatively new shop that has been hosting a great series of in-stores, drawing such diverse and respected Chicago artists as Ken Vandermark and Zelienople. The store itself, it must be said, is very tempting—the ratio of items on the shelf to things items I would buy is by far the highest in the city, and doesn’t limit itself to any particular niche. The selection of modern jazz and improv, indie rock, garage, and experimental is equally weighed, and Saki simply seems to have the best of everything. So wandering the aisles in between sets was the icing on the cake here.

Notice has been fortunate enough to be involved in Jon Mueller’s extraordinary recent phase of work, culminating in the recent Type release of “The Whole,” an album that captures many facets of his art in such a complete and lucid way that it simply has to be considered essential. As a loose companion release, Notice’s “Halves” cassette finds Mueller working with the tape elements of his recent performances to craft some intricate and powerful drones. Both of these documents play into his live shows, which find extraordinary tension between a long drum roll and cassette drones.

Many of the reviews of “The Whole” have been extremely positive, but they must be reviews of the CD version, because they exclude mention of the CD remix by Chicago sound artist Olivia Block that comes with the LP. Block is another musician who is capable of extraordinary complexity and depth, and on her 30-minute remix of “The Whole,” she reorganizes the raw sounds used in Mueller’s recordings to create a completely different kind of piece. Gone is Mueller’s driving percussive attack and vocal incantations, replaced with an ever-changing dronescape—subtly and distinctively textured, well-paced, and essential on its own.

Both were captivating at Saki. Block created an extraordinarily immersive sound environment using multiple small speaker pairs and at least one boombox in addition to the PA. Like fellow Chicagoans Haptic, she deftly blurred the line between industrial and organic textures, punctuating the soundscape with plucked notes on autoharp. Mueller’s unusually long set featured the physicality, precision, and simplicity of his craft that never fail to create a memorable experience. Although they performed separately, there was a sense that both solitary, exacting artists were somehow connected, with both employing rigorous technique and organic development in addition to precise preplanned structures. Here’s hoping that leads both of them onward as they move into their next phases.

(Notice #13) — Jon Mueller : " Halves "

Notice Recordings is very proud to release these pieces by Jon Mueller. For those who have been lucky enough to experience his recent live performances, you may have an idea of what to expect. Based on a simple setup featuring a bracing, undulating drumroll, layers of gleaming aural textures gradually accumulate within themselves, variegated by softly shifting rhythmic patterns. Such a body of sound translates well on magnetic tape ; the thick infrastructure of this music will only change with time and chosen methods of playback.

Illusion of Safety, Travis Bird & Daniel Burke tour

Notice's Travis Bird will be embarking shortly on an East coast tour with Daniel Burke. The two will be playing some sets featuring Burke's Illusion of Safety project and some the eponymous guitar-based project, and the tour will be anchored by a headlining performance at the Sonic Circuits festival in Washington, D.C. and the Signal electronic music festival in Chapel Hill, N.C.


This will work mostly by working within different modes and combinations, and will feature the typical mix of composed and improvised pieces that the duo explore. Go see them if you're in the areas below--

Fire is conjured from areas of concentrated energy as are the visceral textures of Jon Mueller's confrontational live performances — teeming with shifting miniature aural activities.

Photograph taken last night at Reuben's Palace in Chicago. Although, unfortunately, Reuben was not present for the show. Also playing that night was Illusion of Safety, presenting one of his many intense, aggressively undulating modular synth experiments, featuring impromptu guitar playing by Travis Bird . IOS should have a live double-cassette release within a couple months.

Mueller's cassette release on Notice Recordings, " Halves ", should be released in a few weeks, along with an as-yet-untitled C90 from Ben Owen.

Bird & Burke video

Here is a quick montage video of the Bird & Burke duo peforming at WNUR last winter. An amazing day of fog rolling in over Lake Michigan , with chunks of ice and snow floating on the undulating surface. Kind of funny to see this during the summer.

For folks in Europe, and presumably the rest of the world, wanting the newer tapes and also the Illusion of Safety reissue, "Repairs", they may contact Colour Ride (not for IOS) or Boomkat. Boomkat should have a fair amount of the North Sea tape and a very limited amount of the IOS tape.
Colour Ride currently has Tärr and The North Sea, and Boomkat should post theirs in about a week. Things are available from Discriminate now.

Since releasing the tapes listed below, a small hiatus has ensued, soon ending with two new Notices : #11 and #12. The first is by Red Electric Rainbow, who is deeply entwined within the weaves of preparation for the Neon Marshmallow Festival, taking place at the Viaduct Theatre this August in Chicago. The lineup is exceptional. Be sure to attend. Artwork this time on green paper, printed with white ink.

The second tape is by Yellow Crystal Star, who will also be embarking upon a tour this late July. Music recorded in Bangkok. Featuring photography by Mark integrated into the Notice Recordings design.

In other news, Travis Bird & Dan Burke will be touring for their guitar duo project along the East Coast in September. Exact dates and venues TBA.

Also, Dense Reduction and probably Illusion of Safety (or some combination of DR, DR & IOS, ELE + TB & DB, etc) will be performing on WHPK's show, "Pure Hype". Details are unclear as of now, but the airing should be on the 23rd of July.

And lastly, look out for a DR tape on Digitalis Industries Ltd., dropping sometime in July. It is called "Fictive Agriculture".

Ken Camden, Zelienople - Empty Bottle, 3 June 2010

And more ruminations--

Ken Camden performed solo in support of his new Kranky release, Lethargy & Repercussion. Employing a drone generator processed in rhythmic ways, his playing heavily effected and often tweaked in real time, Ken’s set took on a very human, exploratory quality, flying in the face of typical drone guitar pieces. His pieces were episodic, with several motifs weaving in and out of the rhythms of the drone box. This approach lent some immediacy to the show, but it also somehow limited the transcendent effects of the music, as sudden movements, knob tweaking, and changes in the backing modulations drew me out of the trance just as abruptly as his playing put me in it. Ken used the familiar pentatonic scale almost exclusively, carefully moving up and down the neck until he settled on a position at which to cut loose for more ecstatic playing. What really stood out was the texture coming out of his three practice amps, with multiple effects creating a layered atmosphere that faded out or cut abruptly in between pieces.

Zelienople took the stage without a drummer, and singer/guitarist Matt Christensen made an announcement in a grave tone—drummer Mike Weis, with whom he and guitarist Bryan Harding had played for 15 years…was violently ill with the stomach flu. As the laughter subsided in the audience, he and Harding launched into a rumbling squall of feedback, only yielding after several minutes to quieter pieces. With the absence of Weis’ frankly awesome drumming, the songs took on a more intimate feel, scaled back to strumming and sparse repeated riffs. Singing with heavy reverb, Christensen sounded a bit like Mark Kozelek at times, his voice imploring calm and full of reservations. The hypnotic repetition let the songs breathe in a new way that gave them a refreshing, almost singer-songwriter sheen. One of the things that make Zelienople so captivating is that, on top of their wisecracking and laid-back exterior, an undercurrent of deep transcendence seems to simply boil over. Christensen closes his eyes, starts rocking back and forth, and the atmosphere descends. It’s this unexpected and quite natural descent that makes for such superior music.

Koboku Senjû – Hideout, 26 May 2010

Some thoughts from my journal--

Last week, I saw the North American debut of the Japanese-Norwegian quintet, Koboku Senjû, in Chicago. I saw the group live before listening to their debut album. The CD itself, entitled “Selektiv Hogst,” while conceptually strong, falls into a familiar trap of improvised and particularly quiet music. The problem is that, though the music is controlled to a high degree, giving room for intimate interplay between the players, there is nothing on the disc that can compare to the visceral immediacy of seeing the group perform live. In particular, the rigors of circular breathing and deep concentration on display by Eivind Lønning (trumpet) and Espen Reinertdsen (tenor sax) were completely eliminated on disc.

To capture such elusive playing on a recording is difficult, of course. But the actual playing at the Hideout was more inventive, more focused, and executed in a stronger way. It seems that the release documents an early meeting of a group that had developed significantly between its recording and their first North American show. The horn players in particular were magically inventive during the show, playing interwoven lines that mimicked the pulsing of electronic oscillations, the clattering and whispering of modular synthesizers, and other nonmusical elements, with precision and clarity. The incorporation of advanced musical techniques like circular breathing, and the propensity to play very softly and at the very edges of the instruments’ ranges, only added to the power of watching the horn players work.

Tetuzi Akiyama, the Japenese guitarist, played marvelously unresolved lines throughout on an acoustic guitar. The sparseness of his playing gave it a quietly authoritative feel, enhanced by his mystic cowboy persona. Playing fingerstyle and employing multiple capos, brushes, and semi-resonant slides, he coaxed a surprising array of sounds from the acoustic, miked simply with an SM-57, his right hand theatrically plucking as if waving a wand over the room.

The main attraction of the group, if there is one, was the no-input mixing master Toshimaru Nakamura. He’s been released in a number of electroacoustic collaborations recently (trumpet, saxophone), and it was interesting in particular to hear him interact with Akiyama. Their set as a duo at the Hideout produced some intense and distinct soundscapes, complimenting each other with tense, careful, and gorgeous playing.

Perhaps resulting from his choice of instrument, there’s a competitiveness to Nakamura’s virtuosity, a barely-contained impulse to search for the new and to stand out. This was especially apparent in the large ensembles with Chicago players at Enemy, and occasionally with Koboku Senjû. Occasionally, Nakamura would simply crush a piece into submission during a section with crescendos of noise, essentially forcing the acoustic instruments to regroup into a new section. This was a surprising tactic that lent a fresh urgency to the music, but it also reinforced Nakamura’s status—as an innovator on an unusual instrument, and as a known force on the progressive music scene. I have to think that as this group keeps playing, their collective virtuosity will continue to make listeners challenge the limitations of both electronic and acoustic instruments.

We've been working on tapes by The North Sea and Tärr.

They should be ready within a month.



Brad Rose of The North Sea and Eden Hemming Rose will be playing a show in Chicago as ALTAR EAGLE, at Enemy on May 7th. We are hoping to have the tape ready by then. That would be most functional. The tape is called "Relinquished Sparks". It's a sparse and elegant excursion for the project, yet maintains a great amount of intensity. We're extremely honoured to be working on it with him, and everything is turning out really well. The artwork is still a product of E. Lindorff @ Notice Rec. Corp., but this time on the darker side.


Also playing this gig will be Caboladies and Zelienople. All these guys put on absurdly good shows. Highly recommended.


Other information regarding this and other projects, including the Tärr release, is forthcoming.

FOR SALE; Illusion OF Safety "Repairs" Reissue is now available. All other tapes still available.

The classic Illusion Of Safety cassette tape originally issued on Sound Of Pig in 1988 is now available after some delay regarding the printing. Finally, we found an excellent and friendly printer : Kill Hatsumomo right here in Chicago. She did a great job. The cover art is the same as the original, given to us by Dan Burke, except this time it's silkscreen printed. The paper is heavyweight. The whole package looks great ! We have about 30 of these for sale from us, from an Edition of 50. Dan has some as well.





This is the same price as the other tapes : 6$ for North America and 9$ for the World.
